Pennsylvania's Wood Industry Econmic Impact

Back in August 2018, the American Forest and Paper Association (AFPA) produced an industry economic impact fact sheet for each state.  I wanted to share some of the statistics for Pennsylvania with you here.  According to the Pennsylvania fact sheet, the total employment in the forestry, logging, wood products and pulp/paper industries is 53,937.  AFPA found there are a total of 263 manufacturing facilities in the state.

This differs slightly from the DCNR Bureau of Forestry's 2013 Timber Products Output Survey.  That publication lists 284 companies in the directory out of 312 that returned surveys.  Companies were located in 62 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties.

According to the AFPA fact sheet, the value of industry shipments is over $16-million.  The annual estimated state and local taxes paid by these industries amounts to $196-million.  This is on an area of 16.9 million acres of forest land, 59% of the state's land area.

To view the AFPA fact sheet click here. For other states, visit the website at www.afandpa.org. Use the orange "search" field in the upper right hand corner of the webpage and type in the name of the state you wish to find.
